RRPB 02: Your Website Has Not Been Updated in a Year, and What It Is Costing You

Your website is your hardest-working salesperson, but if it has not been updated in a year, it is costing you business. Here is what stale content signals to visitors and search engines, and what to fix first.

1. Stale content tells visitors nobody is home

A website with last year's market stats, sold listings from two summers ago, and a blog that stopped in March tells every visitor the same story: nobody is tending this shop. Visitors do not need to read a word of analysis to feel it. They glance at a date, notice the dust, and their trust drops before you ever get a chance to earn it.

Why it matters for your business

Trust is the currency your website trades in, and freshness is its proof of life. A visitor deciding whether to hand you their contact information is really asking one question: is this business active and paying attention? A stale site answers that question badly.

2. Stale content tells search engines to rank you lower

Visitors are only half the audience. Search engines watch freshness too. A site that never changes looks abandoned to the crawlers deciding who shows up first, and abandoned sites sink. That means fewer visitors in the first place, which means fewer chances to turn anyone into a client.

Why it matters for your business

Stale content does double damage: it converts fewer of the visitors you get, and it brings you fewer visitors overall. Every month without an update is a month your competitors are outranking you for the same searches.

3. What to fix first

You do not need a redesign. Start with the three things visitors and search engines notice first. One, your listings and market numbers: if they are old, nothing else on the page matters. Two, your calls to action: make sure every page asks clearly for the next step, like booking a call or requesting a valuation. Three, one sign of life: a recent market note, this week's new listings, a testimonial from last month's closing. Freshness is a habit, not a project.

Why it matters for your business

The fix costs you a short weekly pass, not a five-figure rebuild. Pick one afternoon a week to update listings, refresh one number, and post one sign of life. Within a month, your site stops working against you and starts working for you again.
